§  Biochemical  Assessment

Nutrient plays an important role in many different metabolic processes, because human body needs a constant supply of adequate nutrients to be able to perform optimal metabolic processes. Biochemical assessment offers to detect a  number of nutrient-depletion stages, namely change in nutrient store, in body fluids, in functional level of tissues as well as in enzyme's activity . Biochemical assessment has also the ability determine nutritional status at the earlier stage of deficiency, and therefore, enabling to make correction at early stage of nutritional inadequacy.

We provide the following analyses for biochemical assessment :

§  Dietary  Assessment

Dietary assessment method is useful to assess pattern of dietary profile, dietary or nutrient inadequacy, and excess intake of nutrients. It is used to estimate food/nutrient intakes including exposure to food additive and contaminant, to  study the relationships between diet and health, to identify groups at risk of developing diseases because of their diet and/or nutrient intake (epidemiological studies), and to evaluate the success of nutrition education and disease risk reduction programs.

The SEAMEO RECFON Laboratory provides dietary assessment services including:

·       Dietary data collection/interview using weighed/estimated food records, 24-hour food recall, food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), (semi)quantitative FFQ and other dietary assessment techniques

·         Dietary data analysis to estimate food and nutrient intakes

We also provide services to plan dietary assessment techniques according to study objective and interpret the results of dietary assessment.

§  Anthropometry Assessment

The term ‘’anthropometry’’ is defined as measurement of the body size, weight and physical proportions (Lee and Nieman, 1996), or measurement of the variations of the physical dimensions, proportions and the gross composition of the human body at different age levels degree of nutrition (Jelliffe, 1966 In: Gibson, 2005).  Anthropometry assessment is a non-invasive technique that can assist to identify different stages of both under- and over- nutrition (mild, moderate, severe), to evaluate changes in nutritional status over time, and to screen for individuals at risk for malnutrition.

The SEAMEO RECFON Laboratory provides two types of Anthropometric measurement:

1.       Assessment of Body Size

  • Body Weight
  • Body Height/Length
  • Knee Height

2.       Assessment of Body Composition

  •         Fat mass and fat free mass using Tanita and skinfolds (biceps, triceps, subscapular, suprailiac)
  •         Waist-to-Hip ratio (WHR) and Waist Circumference
  •         Mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC)

We also provide services to interpret the results of anthropometric measurements.

  • Workshop on healthy canteen and healthy school environment through waste and biopori processing was conducted for elementary school teachers
  • The establishment of a communication forum among elementary school teacher
  • Collaborative workshop with the National Food and Drug Agency (BPOM) on food safety facilitator

o Karawang International Industrial City (KIIC)

  • Training on hygienic and healthy behavior and safe complementary feeding practice was conducted at 2013, in collaboration with SEAMEO-RECFON, the KIIC management, and District Health Office of Karawang

o SEAMEO Star Village

  • The SEAMEO Star Village Program envisions a village that is sustainable, technology-equipped/technopreneurial, ability-rich, and responsible towards fending for the needs of its constituents and in the process contributing to national development goals. It is a collaborative program among the six SEAMEO Centres in Indonesia, namely: Regional Centre for Tropical Biology (BIOTROP), Regional Centre for Food and Nutrition (RECFON), Regional Open Learning Centre (SEAMOLEC), and Regional Centres for Quality Improvement of Teachers and Education Personnel in Language (SEAQIL), Mathematics (SEAQIM), and Science (SEAQIS). The location of the program is in Cihideung Ilir located at the foot of Mt. Salak in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia.

o Community Engagement Grant (CEGs) Program

  • The Department of Nutrition, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, in collaboration with SEAMEO RECFON and Senen Sub District conducted a program entitled “Revitalization of School Health Program among Preschols through Nutrition Education”. This program was funded by the Directorate of Research and Community Development University of Indonesia and SEAMEO RECFON.
