Since the era of President Joko Widodo in 2014, the Ministry of Education and Culture formerly coordinating education from preschool up to higher education, was being reformed. The higher education is now being managed under the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education. While the education from early childhood to high school and culture remain separated and managed by the Ministry of Education and Culture. This separation brings a positive impact to SEAMEO RECFON as we continue serving our excellence in higher education for nutrition professionals; we now also serve our partners’ in improving the food and nutrition of basic and secondary education.
In this regard, since 2015 SEAMEO RECFON has to documented best practices of food and nurtiiton activities taking place at schools. These documentations have been introduce as one big project initiative since 2016 and branded as “Nutrition Goes to School - NGTS” or in Indonesian, Gizi untuk Prestasi. The activities targeted are school community (school principle, teacher, student, canteen vendor, and parent) at all level (elementary, junior high, senior high school, or any equivalent), except higher education.
As part of this project, in August 2016, simultaneous visits to various Directorate Generals at Ministry of Education and Culture (MoEC) Republic of Indonesia were initiated by Director of SEAMEO Secretariat together with Centre Directors from many centers in Indonesia (SEAMEO BIOTROP, SEAMEO SEAMOLEC, SEAMEO RECFON, SEAMEO QITEP in Language, SEAMEO QITEP in Mathematics, SEAMEO QITEP in Science and SEAMEO CECCEP). The meeting envisions the leadership role of the Minister of Education and Culture Republic of Indonesia as the SEAMEO Council President 2017-2019. The consultative meeting have resulted a proposed 3-year cooperation program with Directorate General of and Teacher Education personnel Development, Directorate General of Early Childhood Care Education and Community Education, Directorate General of Primary and Secondary Education, and Directorate General of Culture. This document signifies an important milestone for the direction of NGTS program at SEAMEO RECFON.
