Social cognitive theory for “Healthy Lifestyle Program” among overweight adolescents
A 3-month intervention of “Healthy Lifestyle Program” showed a significant contribution in increasing the adolescents’ self-efficacy (i.e. belief on their capability) on reducing sedentary behaviors and on increasing fruits and vegetables consumption but not yet contributed to a change in the actual practice of physical activity and fruit/vegetable intake. This is one of the key findings presented by Healthy Hidayanty on her doctoral conferment ceremony held on June 8th, 2016. She was one of the doctorate students batch 2011 at Nutrition Study Program Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia organized by SEAMEO RECFON. (jf)

Post Training Visit: School Garden for Nutrition, Literacy, and Entrepreneurship
Following the commitment on SEAMEO College program, a school garden project was championed as a collaborative work among SEAMEO Biotrop, SEAMEO RECFON, and SEAMEO SEAMOLEC. The project was initiated with a training titled School Garden for Nutrition, Literacy, and Entrepreneurship attended by 51 schools from various levels of 9 provinces throughout Indonesia. A post training visit was carried out to 9 schools (3 senior high schools, 2 junior high schools, and 4 elementary schools) in Jakarta, Bogor and Bandung within April and May 2016. The aim of the visit was to gain information about any stage of implementation on school garden activities and to provide technical assistance. For SEAMEO RECFON, the purpose of the visit was focused on obtaining insights on the challenges and opportunities for further considerations when designing the nutrition promotion activities at school. In general, 5 schools have started some activities on the school garden (majority are the elementary schools), 2 schools have installed the hydroponic and green house facilities but not yet starting planting, and other 2 schools have not yet started but commit to start in the next coming academic year. Most schools we visited still focus on the implementation of the school garden. There were not yet significant activities on nutrition promotion as addressed during the training. However, some teachers/school principals who attended the training shared some nutritional practices of their students and situation in the school canteens that urgently call for the need to plan an implementation of the school-based nutrition education/promotion. SEAMEO RECFON, Wageningan University and Medical Faculty of Universitas Indonesia held Workshop on Research Collaboration and ComDev in Food, Nutrition and Health
As part of the close relationship between SEAMEO RECFON and Wageningen University), RECFON has just welcomed the two professors fromthe respective university, Prof. Frans J Kok and Prof. Edith Feskens. Both professors are the expert in the food and nutrition studies. In this visit, the Professors were resource persons in the Workshop on Research Collaboration and Community Development in Food, Nutrition and Health onJune 11th 2015, which was a continuation program after the Guest Lecture in Nutrition with the Theme “Genes, Diet and Low-Grade Chronic Inflammations”.
The Workshop itself was attended by 33 participants that consist of academia, food and nutrition practitioners and Wageningan University Alumni Chapter Indonesia. The Alumni of Wageningen University in Indonesia has been spread in many fields, such as NGOs, private companies and government departments. Therefore, this workshop has become the bridging initiative from many stakeholders to tackle the food and nutrition program. In the other hand, this is also a good opportunity for SEAMEO to expand the partnership with Wageningen alumni that has become active players in food and nutrition area.
In the main session of Workshop, the participants were engaged in the discussion on food and nutrition’s research and community development. In the research group, the discussion discovered a potential topic which is to carry out a community cohort intervention study focusing on pre-pregnancy onwards. The group had also discussed about potential partners and funding for this collaboration. Meanwhile, in the community development group, they discussed about the area of community development by SEAMEO RECFON, target population, funding opportunities, and proposed program for future collaboration. At the end of the Workshop Prof. Frans J Kok highlighted the importance of monitoring and evaluation for the community development programs, where achievements should be clear. A clear line between RECFON’s research projects and community development should be established in order to truly translate science into impact.
